An I-band-selected Sample of Radio-emitting Quasars: Evidence for a Large Population of Red Quasars

چکیده
We have constructed a sample of quasar candidates by comparing the FIRST radio survey with the 16 deg Deeprange I-band survey carried out by Postman et al. (1998, 2002). Spectroscopic followup of this magnitude-limited sample (I < 20.5, Fν(20cm) > 1 mJy) has revealed 35 quasars, all but two of which are reported here for the first time. This sample contains some unusual broad absorption line quasars, including the first radio-loud FR II BAL previously reported by Gregg et al. (2000). Comparison of this sample with the FIRST Bright Quasar survey samples selected in a somewhat bluer band and with brighter magnitude limits reveals that the I-band-selected sample is redder by 0.25–0.5 magnitudes in B−R, and that the color difference is not explained by the higher mean redshift of this sample but must be intrinsic. Our small sample contains five quasars with unusually red colors, including three that appear very heavily reddened. Our data are fitted well with normal blue quasar spectra attenuated by more than 2.5 magnitudes of extinction in the I-band. These red quasars are only seen at low redshifts (z < 1.3). Even with a magnitude limit I < 20.5, our survey is deep enough to detect only the most luminous of these red quasars at z . 1; similar objects at higher redshifts would fall below our in I-band limit. Indeed, the five most luminous objects (using dereddened magnitudes) with z < 1.3 are all red. Our data strongly support the hypothesis that radio quasars are dominated by a previously undetected population of red, heavily obscured objects. Unless highly reddened quasars are preferentially also highly luminous, there must be an even larger, as yet undiscovered, population of red quasars at lower luminosity. We are likely to be finding only the most luminous tip of the red quasar iceberg. A comparison of the positions of the objects in our sample with the catalog of Deeprange cluster candidates reveals that five of our six z < 1 quasars are associated with cluster candidates of similar estimated redshifts. This association is very unlikely to be the result of chance. It has some surprising implications, including the possibility that up to half of the Deeprange clusters at z ∼ 1 have associated quasars. An X–ray selected sample of radio–loud quasars
We construct the first X-ray selected sample of broad line radio-loud AGN from the EMSS survey. In order to test unifying schemes for radio-loud objects, their spectral and statistical properties (both flat and steep spectrum objects) are examined and compared with those of other samples of blazars. The X–ray selection allows us to explore properties of radio–loud quasars 10–100 weaker in the r...
متن کاملLuminous K-band Selected Quasars from UKIDSS
The largest K-band flux-limited sample of luminous quasars to date has been constructed from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey Early Data Release, covering an effective area of 12.8 deg. Exploiting the K-band excess of all quasars with respect to foreground stars, including quasars experiencing dust reddening and objects with non-standard SEDs, a list of targets suitable for spectroscopic follow-up ...
متن کاملOn the origin of radio emission in radio quiet quasars
The radio emission in radio loud quasars originates in a jet carrying relativistic electrons. In radio quiet quasars (RQQs) the relative radio emission is ∼ 10 times weaker, and its origin is not established yet. We show here that there is a strong correlation between the radio luminosity (LR) and X-ray luminosity (LX) with LR ∼ 10 −5LX , for the radio quiet Palomar-Green (PG) quasar sample. Th...
متن کاملDust Reddened Quasars in First and Ukidss: beyond the Tip of the Iceberg
We present the results of a pilot survey to find dust-reddened quasars by matching the FIRST radio catalog to the UKIDSS near-infrared survey, and using optical data from SDSS to select objects with very red colors. The deep K-band limit provided by UKIDSS allows for finding more heavily-reddened quasars at higher redshifts as compared with previous work using FIRST and 2MASS. We selected 87 ca...
متن کاملA search for distant radio-loud quasars in the CLASS survey: three new radio-selected quasars at z>4
We report on the search for distant radio-loud quasars in the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) of flat spectrum radio sources with S5GHz > 30 mJy. Unresolved optical counterparts were selected from APM scans of POSS-I plates, with e < 19.0 and red o−e > 2.0 colours, in an effective area of ∼ 6400 deg. Four sources were found to be quasars with z > 4, of which one was previously known. This sa...
